Why do we love it?
Acheron Markogianni Winery is a special and unique wine from the very rare Greek grape variety called Kolliniatiko. Flowers, spices, herbs, and forest fruits flood the glass and almost make you wonder how can it be that no one had dared to deal with this promising red variety of Peloponnese before.

Markogianni Winery is located in Skillountia Olympia, in Ilia. In recent years it has starred in the wine scene with its impressive wines from local and rare varieties, such as Kolliniatiko. Kolliniatiko is a variety from Kollines of Arcadia that has a deep color and an intense aromatic profile. Until today, it participated in the rose wine of the winery, but by observing its special characteristics, they decided to dare a single-variety red bottling and thus Acheron emerged. The grapes come from privately owned vineyards that are organically farmed. The wine fermented with ambient yeasts and aged in large oak barrels for 14 months. It is then bottled unfiltered and full of intense aromas and dense structure.

The bet for Acheron Markogianni Winery was big but in Markogianni winery they have proved that they are made for tough situations.

ACHERON KOLLINIATIKO 2021 - MARKOGIANNI WINERY

PAIR IT

with beef stew with tomato sauce, wild boar with plums, and beef cheeks ragout.

Beef stew with red wine

  • 1 kg of boneless beef cut into bits
  • 4 tbsps. flour
  • 1 tsp. paprika
  • 2 tbsps. olive oil
  • 1 cup of dry red wine
  • 1 cube beef broth
  • 1/2 tsp. dry thyme
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 pack of small fresh mushrooms, whole
  • baby carrots
  • salt
  • pepper

Wipe the meat with kitchen paper to absorb excess moisture. Stir in a bowl 3 tablespoons of flour, 1 teaspoon of salt, paprika and pepper and sprinkle the meat with the flour mixture.

Sautee the meat in hot olive oil in moderate to strong heat, stirring frequently,  for 4-6 minutes or until it acquires a golden brown color. Remove the meat from the pot. Add the red wine, stirring well to incorporate with the meat residues from the bottom of the pot.

Put the meat back in the pot and add the broth, thyme, bay leaf, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt.

Once it starts boiling, cover the pot, lower the heat in half and allow the meat to cook for about an hour, stirring occasionally. You can accompany your meat with wild rice.
