Casanuova di Nittardi Chianti Classico is in addition to a top Chianti and a very special wine. The 2021 has already received excellent reviews (94 points from Falstaff, 93 points from Robert Parker and 92 points from James Suckling) but what makes it absolutely collectable is definitely its label and packaging!
Fattoria Nittardi has a long history dating back to the 16th century when it was in the hands of Michelangelo Buonarroti. While Michelangelo was painting Cappella Sistina he came close to the Pope and thus he was sending him wines every year. This is a tradition that continues until today, and the wines of each year are first presented to the Pope.
In 1982 the winery passed into the hands of Peter Femfert and his wife, Stefania Canali. Peter and Stefania decided to pay homage to Michelangelo and so every year, for 41 years, the Casanuova di Nittardi label is designed by an artist. This year the label was conceived by American director, producer and screenwriter James Ivory who directed the excellent A Room with a View and Call Me by Your Name, among others!
The content of the bottle is 100% Sangiovese from the vineyard Vigna Doghessa. The wine ages for 14 months in old French oak barrels (only 10% of them are new). After, it's bottled and aged for a few months in the bottle, remaining in the cellar of the winery.
