Chateau Angelus - The Winery
The history of the winery goes back to the distant 1782, when Jean de Boüard de Laforest first settled in Saint-Emilion. Bequeathed to his grandson Maurice de Boüard de Laforest in 1920 and becoming the legendary Chateaux Angelus, the vineyard is located in a very privileged amphitheater spot, overlooking the three famous churches of the area. The bells rung during the day, urging the inhabitants to stop their work to pray and was the inspiration for the creation of the winery's emblem that adorns all the labels, the bell. In 1954, which was the year of Saint-Emilion's first classification, Château Angélus was immediately classified as a Grand Cru Classé, while in the period from 2012 to 2022, it was on the list of Premiers Grands Crus Classés “A” of the region. Today, it is managed by the 8th generation of the family, Stéphanie de Boüard-Rivoal and represents the epitome of French winemaking tradition and innovation, through wines of unparalleled quality, finesse and complexity, with remarkable aging potential, placing it among the most important Châteaux of Bordeaux.
Chateau Angelus 2018 - The Wine
Chateau Angelus 2018, consists of Merlot (65%) and Cabernet Franc (35%). For this year the proportion of Cabernet Franc was smaller than previous years, but with tremendous concentration and character, coming from a vineyard of the highest historical importance, aged 60 to 80 years, among the oldest planted by Stéphanie de Boüard's grandfather- Revoal. The composition of its loamy soil expresses in a unique way the particularity of Saint-Emilion's terroir. The wine rested for approximately 22 months in 100% new French oak barriques, while 10% passed through foudres barrels, resulting in a multi-layered character that set flutters in the hearts of the artillery of wine critics worldwide. The ratings it received are legendary, with 100pts from Robert Parker-Wine Advocate, 100pts from Jeb Dunnuck, 99pts from James Suckling, 98pts from Wine Spectator, Decanter and Wine Enthusiast. The 2018 vintage is considered legendary and all its bottles have been marked with the figure of the Phoenix bird from Greek mythology, which symbolizes eternity and just like the vine, has the power of eternal regeneration!
