Chateau Cheval Blanc - The Winery
Chateau Cheval Blanc is one of the most legendary wineries on the Right Bank of Bordeaux and Saint-Émilion. Cheval Blanc won its first medal at the 1862 Universal Exhibition in London – the first of a series of successes that have built its reputation over the years, achieving price levels comparable to the First Growths of Médoc.
In the first classification of Saint-Émilion wines in 1955, Cheval Blanc received the highest possible score and was classified in the top Premier Grand Cru Classé A category, from which it was “revolutionarily” withdrawn in 2022, no longer agreeing with the criteria that shape it. Nevertheless, it is still considered by many to be one of the greatest – if not the best – wines not only in Bordeaux but also in the world. Currently, at the helm of the winery is Pierre Lurton and if his name sounds familiar it is because he is the CEO of the legendary Château d’Yquem and Château Marjosse.
Chateau Cheval Blanc 2011 - The Wine
Chateau Cheval Blanc is one of the most famous wines in the world not only because it is internationally adored and admired or because it has a long history but also because it has “starred” in several films. It was the wine ordered by the snarky critic in Ratatouille but also what Sean Connery drank in the James Bond film “Never Say Never Again”. Let’s not forget that it was the plot twist in Sideways, where the protagonist was engaged in an all-out war with Merlot but the greatest wine in his collection, the one he kept for the best moment was a Cheval Blanc from ‘61.
Chateau Cheval Blanc 2011, is made up of Merlot (43%) and Cabernet Franc (57%). The wine was aged for approximately 14 months in 100% new French oak barriques, creating what we call a classic Saint-Emilion but also an experience that you definitely want to live. The scores it received are fabulous: 97pts from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate and Tim Atkin MW, 96pts from Jeb Dunnuck and 95pts from Jane Anson-Inside Bordeaux, Falstaff and Wine Enthusiast!
The 2011 vintage benefited from dry (but not too dry) weather and pleasantly warm temperatures, creating an excellent, very classic vintage, reflecting the estate’s winemaking philosophy. The best part is that it's a wine that has years ahead of it but is perfectly ready to be enjoyed now, as we're talking about the 2011 vintage!! I mean, honestly, how much better could it get??
