We just got our hands on the 2022 vintage of the award-winning El Enemigo Chardonnay. Needless to say, you have to try it. James Suckling once described it as “The best wine in the world under $30.” Its quality remains consistently high, as does its rating from important wine critics. The 2022 vintage received 93pts from Tim Atkin!
Adrianna Catena, daughter of Nicolas Catena, along with Alejandro Vigil, chief winemaker of Catena Zapata Winery, decided to create their winery in Argentina, El Enemigo.
Their Chardonnay is a very special wine as it is aged for 9 months in French oak barrels (35% new) with the presence of flor. Flor, in case you were wondering, is a thin layer of yeast that sits on the surface of the wine and protects it from oxidation. This technique is often used in Spanish Sherry! Flor gives the wine a special aromatic character reminiscent of mushrooms and yeast. Combined with the complexity of the barrel and the sharp finesse of a Chardonnay from an altitude of 1400 meters, we are not at all surprised by the crazy scores it gets every time!
Still haven’t you added it to your cart?
