Lluerna - Els Vinyerons Vins Naturals is a wine clearly for fans of minerality and we can easily call it one of the Catalan wonders!
You've probably heard of the Spanish variety Xarel-lo, used in their traditional sparkling wine, Cava. Here, the Els Vinyerons team made a single-varietal Xarel-lo (cha-re-yo) that also belongs to natural wines. The Vinyerons Vins Naturals project started as a challenge for the two friends, with the aim of fully expressing the variety through natural vinification! The former pharmacist, Amós Bañeres and the descendant of several generations of winemakers, Alex Ruiz Masach, guided by their common "minimalist" philosophy, highlighted the local varieties and the special soil of Sarroca. Their vineyards are cultivated in limestone soil, which is overwhelmed by an abundance of fossilized oysters, which were formed during the Neogene period, 18 million years ago. So expect a perfectly mineral wine with its crunch and saltiness!
For Lluerna Blanc Els Vinyerons the grapes were picked by hand and earlier than typical harvest dates, to keep the variety's crisp acidity and low sugars. This will result in a low-level and refreshing wine, sure to cool you down on a hot Catalan day! Fermented with indigenous yeasts and left in tanks for 4 months, it was blended with 10% of Xarel-lo's previous vintage, matured for 12 months in small French oak barrels.
