Pinot Grigio Cru Selection Marjan Simcic is without a doubt the most special Pinot Grigio we have ever tasted. From the first moment it was served in the glass, we were surprised by both its rosy color and its exuberant temperament. Pinot Grigio has never been so enjoyable.
Pinot Grigio is the same variety as Pinot Gris which makes some of the great wines of Alsace. In Italy, however, the style and expression of the variety is quite different. When Italians hear Pinot Grigio they think of a pleasant and light white wine to accompany their aperitivo. On the other hand, Marjan Simcic, who is considered one of the top producers in the region, gives to the variety a completely different dimension. Marjan is the fifth generation of the winery and his family has been involved in wine since 1860. They have vines on both Italian and Slovenian soil, with some vines over 55 years old. The special soil gives 3 different categories of wines, depending on the soil where the grapes grow.
Pinot Grigio Cru Selection Marjan Simcic comes from opoka soils (granite, sand and clay) and the vines are 44 years old. The wine ferments with ambient yeasts in large (2500 liter) conical oak barrels, along with the skins, for 8 days. Then, after being pressed and separated from the skins, the wine matures there for 12 months, with its fine lees. It is bottled unfiltered and matures for another 6 months in the bottle. The result impresses with its structure and complexity.
Try it now or after 5 years, it has a long way to go!
