Why do we love it?

Kaleidoscope Kaapzicht is a red wine that’s got it all and is totally worth it! And we explain: this wine boasts an abundance of red and black fruit, with fine oak notes and moderate but soft tannins. It can be enjoyed both on its own and with food. It also pairs well with pizza and souvlaki, but it also complements a nice piece of beef. And all this for a price of under 15 euros—what more could we ask for?

The Kaapzicht winery, nestled in the renowned and historic Stellenbosch region of South Africa, was founded in 1946 by David Steytler, a former major in World War II. After leaving his military duties, Steytler decided to pursue his passion for viticulture. He exchanged his Karoo sheep for a wine farm, initially named Rozendal, in the picturesque hills of Bottelary. A year after, he planted the first Chenin Blanc vines, which are now among the oldest in South Africa, while in 1959 he planted his first Pinotage vines.

For Kaleidoscope Kaapzicht, we have a complex blend of 39% Shiraz, 19% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Petit Verdot, 11% Merlot, 4% Pinotage, 4% Cabernet Franc, 3% Cinsaut, 3% Malbec, and 1% Grenache. After fermentation in stainless steel tanks and the completion of malolactic conversion, the wine undergoes a 14-month aging process in oak barrels and tanks. This process imparts a fruity and enjoyable character with a subtle spicy undertone.

Kaleidoscope Kaapzicht is the ultimate value for money wine that will elevate any dish.

On the palate, it has medium body, crisp acidity, and medium tannins. Plums, cherries, red and black berries, black tea, pepper, liquorice, and chocolate intertwine in a harmonious symphony of flavours. The finish is savoury and lingers on the palate.

KALEIDOSCOPE 2021 - KAAPZICHT

PAIR IT

with grilled ribeye steak, lamb chops with rosemary, burgers, roast duck with berry sauce, grilled portobello mushrooms, lentil stew or stuffed bell peppers with rice and feta

Beef stew with red wine

  • 1 kg of boneless beef cut into bits
  • 4 tbsps. flour
  • 1 tsp. paprika
  • 2 tbsps. olive oil
  • 1 cup of dry red wine
  • 1 cube beef broth
  • 1/2 tsp. dry thyme
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 pack of small fresh mushrooms, whole
  • baby carrots
  • salt
  • pepper

Wipe the meat with kitchen paper to absorb excess moisture. Stir in a bowl 3 tablespoons of flour, 1 teaspoon of salt, paprika and pepper and sprinkle the meat with the flour mixture.

Sautee the meat in hot olive oil in moderate to strong heat, stirring frequently,  for 4-6 minutes or until it acquires a golden brown color. Remove the meat from the pot. Add the red wine, stirring well to incorporate with the meat residues from the bottom of the pot.

Put the meat back in the pot and add the broth, thyme, bay leaf, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt.

Once it starts boiling, cover the pot, lower the heat in half and allow the meat to cook for about an hour, stirring occasionally. You can accompany your meat with wild rice.
