If you haven't put Chile on the wine map yet, you will with Sol de Sol Chardonnay Vina Aquitania. It is the creation of three great winemakers, Bruno Prats (Chateau Cos d'Estournel), Paul Pontallier (Chateau Margaux) and of Chile's leading oenologist and winemaker, Felipe de Solminihac. Along the way, Ghislain de Montgolfier (Bollinger Champagne) was added to the company.
In 1993 Felipe de Solminihac, after being impressed with the cool climate New Zealand wines, began his search to find a region that could produce wines of a similar style in Chile. He ended up in the southern part of the country, specifically the Malleco Valley, which until then was considered unsuitable for viticulture due to its cold climate. From this experimental vineyard of Felipe with extremely low yields and with a very late harvest due to the cold, after about 20 years came the first Sol de Sol Chardonnay that became the winery's signature and one of the most famous Chilean wines worldwide.
Sol de Sol Chardonnay Vina Aquitania was vinified with whole bunches, with a small percentage going through malolactic fermentation, and matured in oak barrels for 9 months of which 10% were new, before being ready. The combination of the volcanic soil, the stay on the lees and the touch of the oak barrels has produced a sensational Chardonnay that has established the winery worldwide and deserves to be enjoyed now or in the next 5-6 years.
The bottles that came to Greece are limited, so act quickly.
