Why do we love it?
Riesling Trocken Donnhoff is a Riesling from one of the leading producers in Germany and the world. The combination of different soils gives a wine with mineral but at the same time, with a fruity character that will excite the Riesling lovers.
The Donnhoff family has been in Nahe for 250 years but the big turn towards fame and absolute recognition came in 1976 when Helmut took over. Helmut Donnhoff was a "superstar" for Robert Parker who often gave him his 100pts. On the other hand, the famous wine writer Hugh Johnson considers that he was "absolutely committed to quality and a huge natural talent in winemaking". Cornelius, who learned all the secrets of Riesling from him, continues in his footsteps.
For Riesling Trocken Donnhoff the vines are not irrigated, although Nahe has a very dry climate. This forces the vines to dig deep into the ground for water and creates competition, contributing to the top quality of grapes. Vineyards with different soils are selected, volcanic, clayey, and stony, to get the different characteristics of each. It is well known that Riesling has the unique ability to express the different terroirs in the final wine, so Cornelius takes full advantage of it. The vinification is done with ambient yeasts, in stainless steel tanks and old large barrels of 1200 liters. Then, it matures on its fine lees for several months, to get extra complexity. The result is expressive and delicious, with the discreet hints of petrol that we love.
You really can't resist this wine! It just can't be done!
