Once we had Le Grand Roc 2009 of Domaine Gerard Fiou in our glasses, we had to look repeatedly at the bottle to see if we were really drinking a 2009 Sancerre! The color was amazing, it still had some greenish hues, while in the nose it was astonishing. Unbelievable complexity, freshness and elegance impressed us from the very first moment.
If you're already intrigued, wait till you hear the rest. Le Grand Roc comes from 60 years old Sauvignon Blanc vines, planted in the Sancerre unique terroir, on silex soil which gives the characteristic mineral character to wines. Part of the wine ferments in stainless steel and cement tanks while the rest ferments in new oak barrels. Then, it is left with its fine wine lees for 10 months with frequent battonage. The result is a rich, oily, with sharp acidity and salty mouthfeel, typical Sancerre. It belongs to the category of white wines that can age beautifully. According to Jancis Robinson and Wine Spectator, the 2009 vintage is one of the best and it can for sure age even more (oh yes!).
Can you imagine now how lucky we felt when the Sancerre Le Grand Roc 2009 fell in our hands? Needless to say that it's super rare and there are strictly limited bottles!
