Why do we love it?

Ever heard of Petroulianos? No? Then it’s time you did—by tasting Petroulianos from Vatistas Vineyards. This rare and nearly forgotten white grape variety from Laconia sparked the curiosity of Ioannis Vatistas years ago. His passion for it was so strong, he began cultivating it in the family’s privately owned vineyards. Today, in the hands of his daughter Maria, the variety shines—producing a refined and elegant wine that’s been awarded a Bronze Medal by Decanter!

Nestled in the plains of Voies and the slopes of Pantanassa, near historic Monemvasia, the Vatistas family vineyards benefit from ideal conditions for grape ripening. The region itself is steeped in winemaking history, once famed for the legendary sweet wine Malvasia.

Petroulianos is a white grape native to Laconia, known for its subtle acidity and, until recently, used only in blends. Maria Vatista took a bold step by crafting a single-varietal wine from Petroulianos—and the result speaks for itself. Fermented and aged in stainless steel tanks on fine lees, the wine is elegant and aromatic, with delicate notes of citrus and white-fleshed fruits.

Pair Vatistas Petroulianos with crispy fried calamari for the ultimate summer combination.

Vatistas Winery
The Vatistas family started working in 1986 on the family vineyard in Agios Nikolaos Monemvasia. Later, other vineyards followed in the Plain of Voion and on the slopes of Pantanassa. They started bottling their first wines in 1990 and since then they haven't stopped experimenting with local varieties.

PAIR IT

with fresh salads, light chicken dishes or seafood pasta with white sauce.

Chicken with zucchinis

  • 1 kg. chicken breast
  • 750 gr. zucchinis
  • 1 onion
  • 2-3 green onions
  • 1 chicken stock cube
  • 100 ml. olive oil
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 lemons
  • Salt
  • Pepper

Once the breast is cut into smaller fillets, mix in a bowl half the olive oil along with the chicken stock, until a mixture is made and the chicken is dipped. Put the fillets in a non-stick pan until they are evenly browned. Transfer the fillets to a saucepan and, in the pan, add the onion and sauté it in medium heat. Then mix the onion with the chicken. Put the pot on medium heat and add 1 cup of hot water. Simmer for 20 minutes, add zucchinis and chopped green onions, plus freshly ground pepper and salt if necessary.

Prepare the egg yolk by whipping the egg whites, add the yolks, the juice from 2 lemons and finally the hot liquid from the pan.

Pour in the egg sauce, and keep churning until it has been incorporated into the food.
